"I think I can. I think I can. I think I can." -The Little Engine That Could

“You’re a survivor. You’re going to handle whatever comes along. You’re going to find strength you didn’t know you had and grace to deal with whatever you need to.”

Donna Fargo, I Prayed for You Today

Ray, being the wonderful person that he is, gifted this post to me. When I saw this post, I was incredibly moved by the simplicity of this quote. Still, it conveyed what we need to hear exactly when we (I) needed to hear it.

At my school, my co-workers and I have adopted a philosophy when it comes to the difficult stuff– “Everything will work out because it has to.” You have everything you need inside of you to make your life a good one. If it needs to happen, then it will. If you need to make it happen or simply make it through, you will. You can survive anything.

Well, why does it have to? You have to know that inside you, this unlived potential is thriving off of every mistake, every misstep, every wrong turn. Your life’s adventure is waiting to reveal itself when you finally realize that you can do this. Your strength gathers fuel from all of which you have overcome. Your grace comes from learning life’s steps one trip and stumble at a time. A professional ANYTHING becomes that way from continued work, continued heartache. They came back from it because they afforded themselves grace. Grace (in its many meanings) walks hand-in-hand with words like hope and survivor. Grace by God or grace by finding your way and navigating your situations with poise and purpose. It’s a beautiful combination.

This quote also reminds you of an important aspect that many of us may not realize… “you’re going to find the strength you didn’t know you had…” Unrealized potential. Untapped passion. Unlived LIFE– all bottled up inside a wonderful you. Sometimes it takes someone else to help you see this strength. Other times, we simply get out of the way of our own sunshine and let that light unveil that strength. Whatever it is, realize that you always have some strength stored away, hidden from even yourself until you need it most.

Find yourself in a survivor’s space. Never-going-to-quit attitude. Hope (while sometimes tucked away) that is ever present. Strength by the ton, strategically placed along your journey. And Grace. Grace surrounding you, reminding you not to confuse your path with your destination.

Most days of our lives, it is everything to live to the fullest. Some days, it is everything simply to survive. Realize the difference in these two times and know in your heart that you will have the strength and grace to make that call. That’s what survivors do. That’s what you can do.

Love and Light, Carly
