"I think I can. I think I can. I think I can." -The Little Engine That Could

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

— Lao Tzu

May you find strength in the ones who love you. These are the ones who risk heartbreak to show you they care. Love is unconditional. No matter what, they choose to love you.

May you gain courage from each person to whom you give your heart openly. You lay your heart on the line every time you care for them. To love someone is to be the most genuine version of yourself. That vulnerability is unparalleled.

You have fought for love. You have fought for your happiness. Today is a day to celebrate love in its may forms and revel in the joy love can bring.

I hope that today (and every day) you find a moment to realize how much love surrounds you and know you are more loved than you can possibly imagine.

Love and light,

“Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.”

— Mike Tyson

Yet another great quote from my Life is good Playmakers training.

The past few weeks have certainly sent some punches my way. It seemed that for a while I couldn’t avoid what was headed my way. Like a boxer who has met a very powerful opponent, my vision was blurred stopping me from seeing the next punch and particularly the good that was still around me.

Just because a detour appears when you are driving does not mean that your final destination disappears.

Just because you face one, two, a hundred punches doesn’t mean that you won’t still win the fight.

You can win. Keep those gloves up and keep fighting for the good. Remind yourself that a plan is only that: a detailed proposal for doing or achieving something.**

**Nowhere in the definition does it say GUARANTEE.

Plans change. Roads close. You can still get where you want to. All you need is enough fight and perseverance to see yourself through the punches and the detours.

Don’t worry. You’ll get there.

“If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.”

— Frederick Douglass

A very wise friend spoke to me during a difficult time. I told him I was struggling. He told me, “Struggling means you’re still fighting.” It was that moment of weakness that made me realize how strong I had been.

There has to be a struggle. There has to be opposition. You have to take the bitter with the better. Sometimes, all we need to realize is that we have the fight in us. Feeling defeated comes with realizing we might lose that for which we have fought.

You have fight in you. You possess that spark. Get to struggling. Get your fight back.

“It makes no difference what you do, do it as hard as you can for as long as you can and never give up.”

— Devon Currie, St. Baldrick’s Kid

A year ago today I shaved my head to raise money and awareness of kids cancer. It was one of the best experiences of my life. This quote sums up what we all need to do. No matter what we’re faced with. No matter how insurmountable it seems. As longs as we are doing SOMETHING, it doesn’t matter what, we must fight for as long as we can without ceasing. Take it from, Devon. He knows what it means to persevere.

“You may have to fight a battle more than once to win.”

— Margaret Thatcher

Most of us feel this huge sense of relief to know that something we care deeply about is worth the fight. We all have this hope that when we have slayed the dragon that today brought us, we will never face it again. Amidst dropping the kids off at school, going to work, helping everyone we could, making it home safely, and doing everything else the world asks, you find a pattern emerging… the dragon of yesterday has risen. Unfortunately this particular phoenix of struggles and tribulations can rise again and again… and again. It’s during these times that we need to remind ourselves– as warriors, does a war consist of one battle? Does someone engaged in combat have only one problem to overcome before declaring victory? Or, is it the more likely scenario that this same tyrant must be faced again and again until one day, it does not return. You hope and you pray that each day you have the strength and wisdom to win the battles you can and survive those you can’t today. Please pay close attention to how that last line was phrased. I refuse to declare defeat in your name or anyone else’s. You, as much as anyone else, have a fighting chance. You may not win this battle today. You may not win it in a week. And after a while of fighting and (seemingly) winning the same battle over and over again, you may feel run down. I will leave for you here a fountain from which to drink. Nourish yourself in hope and remind yourself that you can win. Whether it’s the first battle or the last… you can win.

So long as you have the courage to FIGHT.

Love and Light,

Life is…

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”

— Mother Teresa

Life holds so many things for so many people. Each day it brings the promise of something new. No matter how you view your life, there is promise in it. Realize all the good that each day holds and savor each moment.

If the sun is shining, bask in its glow and warmth.

If the clouds are out, look for their silver linings.

When you are happy, embrace the smiles and the optimism you can share with others.

When you are sad, allow yourself to work through it, not over it, and become a better person.

Let the light of good times illuminate the darkness you sometimes feel.

Hold onto the love you feel for others and let their love reach you.

Give life the benefit of the doubt. It can and will surprise you.

Love and Light, Carly
